Biography

Guitarist and musician Tom Cykman has been gaining increasing recognition in the music scene, participating in projects such as Alexandre Rodrigues Trio (Kaeté) as guitarist, Ivan Sacerdote’s project (Aroeira) as music producer, and performing as a duo with Ivan himself. He is also currently a member of the group led by Jota P — saxophonist, flutist, and composer — a two-time Latin Grammy winner alongside Hermeto Pascoal.

With international recognition, Tom has toured Argentina, Portugal, and Israel (Shablul Jazz), He has been invited by UFRGS and UFMG universities to teach classes on improvisation in the Popular Music undergraduate programs, in courses led by Julio Herrlein and Lucas Telles, respectively.

Throughout his career, Tom has shared the stage with renowned musicians such as Edu Ribeiro, Robertinho Silva, Shabaka Hutchings (Sun Ra Arkestra), Renato Braz, Luísa Mitre, Túlio Araújo, Fábio Leal, and Iury Batista, among others. His first album, Chorando em Frente, released in 2024 as a duo with Félix Júnior, received critical acclaim in both specialized and mainstream media outlets such as Instrumental Verve, Calendário do Choro, G1, Folha de São Paulo, Cultura FM, and GuitarLoad Magazine.

He was awarded the Aldir Blanc Grant, through which he conducted a series of workshops on the role of the electric guitar in choro, gaining international attention with over 270 participants from Brazil, Argentina, and Portugal.

In 2011, at just 18 years old, he placed second in the Santo Ângelo Competition, becoming a partner of the company for two consecutive years, which led him to perform at Expomusic 2012. He won the 2012 FCC Award for Best Composition and was featured in the “No Player” section of the 25th edition of Guitar Load Magazine that same year. He also composed the soundtrack for the short film Tubérculos, winner of the Armando Carreirão Award in 2014.

Between 2016 and 2017, he played mandolin with the Orquestra de Choro do Campeche, opening for Arthur Moreira Lima in downtown Florianópolis and performing at Fenaostra 2017. From 2016 to 2019, he participated in the Orquestra de Choro do Campeche, the group Pururuca Platinada (Northern and Northeastern Brazilian rhythms), Fuá de Pareia (forró and popular culture), as well as the projects Trio Ladeira (samba-jazz) and Grupo Choro Xadrez. In 2019, he co-produced and recorded Letícia Coelho’s album Brota, following a tour of five cities in Minas Gerais in 2017. That same year, he performed at the Floripa Jazz Festival and the international Kleztival (São Paulo) and in 2020 performed with Dudu Maia’s quartet in the Clube 55 project, curated by Alegre Corrêa (Joe Zawinul).

In 2021, Tom released the single Intocável as a duo with the renowned guitarist Félix Júnior. That same year, he was a finalist in the national festival É no Choro que Eu Vou, performing Ney Souza’s composition Enlurado. He is also part of the trio led by composer Iara Ferreira as guitarist, arranger, and producer. With this group, he toured Argentina and Portugal in 2022 and recorded the Iara Ferreira Trio EP (2022) and VERDEAMARELA (2023).

In 2023, he moved to São Paulo, where he has been building strong connections within the local scene, notably participating as guitarist, producer, and arranger in Alexandre Rodrigues Trio, and leading the Agenda Instrumental SP, a project promoting São Paulo’s instrumental music scene. In 2024, he released Chorando em Frente with Félix Júnior, interpreting choro classics on the electric guitar — an unprecedented achievement — with significant media coverage (G1, Folha, Cultura FM, GuitarLoad Magazine, Instrumental Verve…) and many positive critical reviews.

Also in 2024, Tom recorded the Alexandre Rodrigues Trio album featuring Shabaka Hutchings, set for release in the first half of 2025. At the end of 2024, he began a partnership with award-winning clarinetist Ivan Sacerdote, collaborating in various projects both as a duo — with a concert at São Paulo’s Catedral da Sé — and in the production of Ivan’s first solo album, Aroeira, which Tom co-produced alongside Ivan.

In 2025, Tom joined the group led by Jota P — saxophonist, flutist, and composer — a two-time Latin Grammy winner alongside Hermeto Pascoal.
